Hamtramck is home to many Muslims immigrants and their American born children. Just last year, Hamtramck was proclaimed the first majority Muslim city when the city council election brought in a majority Muslim membership.
Hamtramck had been predominately a Polish enclave – surrounded on all sides by the city of Detroit. Most of the Poles have migrated out of the city in the past few decades, now populated with people with roots in Yemen, Bosnia and Bangladesh.
The protest preceded a second protest held later that afternoon at Detroit Metropolitan Airport twenty miles west.
Detroit Public TV, a Detroit Journalism Cooperative partner, captures the response of residents gathered in front of Hamtramck City Hall on January 29, 2017. Hundreds came together to protest President Donald Trump’s executive order creating travel restrictions from seven countries with large Muslim populations.
