Nearly 50 years after a police raid at 12th and Clairmount streets ignited violence and carnage, the Detroit Journalism Cooperative is exploring whether the conditions that produced the civil unrest in July 1967 have improved for Detroit residents.
Bridge Magazine’s Bill McGraw joins Detroit Today Host Sandra Svoboda to introduce the project and talk about the findings of the Kerner Commission, the panel empowered by President Lyndon Johnson to examine the causes of riots/rebellions across the United States. McGraw says even nearly 50 years after the commission issued its report, the findings remain relevant to explain causes of inequality in American society.
