Detroit Public Television took our American Black Journal/One Detroit Roadshow to the Brightmoor neighborhood at City Covenant Church. Hosts Stephen Henderson and Christy McDonald explored the topic of Education in Detroit by asking the provocative question, “Do we really care about our kids’ education?”

They explored critical topics like absenteeism, poverty, transportation and lack of charter school regulation with a powerful and esteemed panel of guests including:

  1. DPSCD Superintendent Nikolai Vitti
  2. Brightmoor Alliance’s Rev. Larry Simmons
  3. City Covenant’s Pastor Semmeal Thomas
  4. 482Forward’s Jonathon Clark
  5. DPSCD parent advocate, Sharlonda Buckman

When it comes to their children’s education, how can parents empower themselves? What is DPSCD doing to help better engage parents?

Stephen talked to Sharlonda Buckman, who heads up family and community engagement for the Detroit Public Schools community District and Jonathan Clark, board chair of 482 Forward. Christy also interviewed grandparent and Brightmoor resident, Ora Williams, from the audience.
